Former Pelican baseball player Pierre LePage ’07 was drafted Tuesday by the Chicago Cubs. Pierre, who has spent the past three years wearing blue and white for the University of Connecticut Huskies, put together an impressive high school and collegiate career before getting the call in the 13th round from the big leagues.
During his tenure on the Island, Loomis Chaffee boys varsity baseball
coach Jeff Ross says Pierre was a hard-working, gritty,
get-the-job-done kind of athlete who raised the bar for his teammates
and the LC baseball program. Following his illustrious career on the Island, Pierre headed to UConn, where played second base for the Huskies.
According to Huskies head baseball coach Jim Penders, "Pierre is an extraordinary student-athlete that always played as hard as he could. He's been one of our most consistent, confident, and competitive players. I'm very proud of him and glad the Cubs recognized his immense potential by drafting him."
Despite his 5-foot-7, 175-pound frame, UConn's stat sheet for Pierre is nothing short of impressive. As a junior this year, he hit .327 with three home runs and 57 RBI and recorded 81 hits and 63 runs scored along with 29 steals in 35 attempts. He led the Huskies with 20 doubles, and struck out only three times in 348 at-bats, which was an NCAA record. In 56 games played, he had 106 putouts and 173 assists at second base.
