Event Recap:
Williston 10
Loomis Chaffee 17

The Loomis Chaffee Varsity Water Polo Pelicans closed out their regular season with a strong victory over rival Williston Northampton School. Both teams entered the contest on short preparation due to the snowstorm and ensuing power outage in the Northeast. Jake Bosee got things going for the Pelicans with a nice catch and shoot, Addison Wright followed with a counterattack goal and a 5m free throw goal following a nice shot from Williston’s Diaz that skipped past Loomis goalie Ryan Shelby. With two minutes left in the period, Loomis put forward a good push with Jamil Hashmi, Sam Broda and Wright all scoring to give the Pelicans a 6-1 lead as the teams traded ends of the pool.

The second period opened with Will Bogle scoring from 2m, which Williston’s Mendoza answered with a counterattack goal. After a mid-period timeout, the Pelicans put forward another good push with Tyler Rehor converting a power play, Bosee scoring from the flat and Phil DeLaMater sniping a beautiful cross-cage shot from the perimeter to give Loomis a 10-3 edge at the half.

Attacking the deep end in the third period, Loomis’s offense leaned on Will Bogle who scored on two nice shots from the strong flat. Wright then drew an ejection and converted the power play to put Loomis up 13-4. Williston capitalized on a power play of their own but a bunch of fresh players came off the bench late in the period to strengthen Loomis’s counterattack, and Landon Theis, Steven Wang, Sam Broda and Doug Gorman each contributed a goal.

Williston came on strong in the 4th quarter as they attacked the deep end in the final frame. Williston’s Cavanaugh scored twice, Mendoza tallied another two and Friere scored one as the Wildcats fought back to narrow the margin to 17-10. The Pelican offense stalled a bit but Loomis sophomores Jeremy Bogle, Tripp Miller and John Furlong gained valuable experience. Hats off to Loomis goalie Ryan Shelby who posted 16 saves, a steal and three assists on the day.

Loomis is awaiting notification about post season tournament details.
