Reunion weekend came to a successful close Sunday, June 14, after three fun-filled days of events for the young and young-at-heart. More than 800 Chaffee, Loomis and Loomis Chaffee alumni and their guests descended on the Island Friday afternoon, eager to catch up with old friends, former teachers and take part in the varied Reunion events.
Even a bit of rain could not keep close to 50 golfers from hitting the links at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course for the annual Loomis Chaffee Alumni Golf Outing. Click here for a story on the golf outing.
Also on Friday, three Back to School workshops, led by Loomis Chaffee faculty and staff, were offered for alumni. Click here to read more about the workshops.
Head of School Sheila Culbert hosted the 50th
Reunion reception on Friday evening. The laughs and stories shared at the reception echoed those
of the 25th Reunion reception just a few yards away in Founders Lounge.
Following the receptions, the aromatic scent of
cajun spices beckoned alumni to the all-class shrimpfest in Grubbs
Quad. Reunion-goers under the tent were entertained by Eight to the Bar, the same band that played for the Class of 1984's prom 25 years ago. Other alumni chose to head to the SNUG were they were treated to a special performance by Sean Kelly of The Samples.
Saturday
morning featured a panel discussion on the state of economy moderated by retired economics teacher Jim "Grim" Wilson. Panelists who were involved in discussing this timely topic were Mary Collins '79, professor and writer; Jason Karp '94, Managing Partner at KPO Ventures; Rich Osborne '69, retired Duke Energy Corporate Executive; and Dang Phan '79, Managing Partner of Grove International Partners.
The
traditional, bagpiper-led parade got the afternoon's activities
started. During lunch under the big tent, youngsters enjoyed crafts and
face painting by current Loomis Chaffee students and dancing to the
sounds of Farmer Rick's Band. Camp Pelican also featured a fire and ice show by Mad Science, a robotics demonstration, swimming, games and more!
The afternoon was filled with numerous events that started with an alumni lacrosse game which was part of a celebration of 50 years of boys lacrosse at Loomis Chaffee. Another panel took place in Founders Chapel. This panel focused on the local/slow food movement and was moderated by Corby Kummer, author and food writer for The Atlantic. Panelists included Nancy Weber '59, author and owner of the catering company Between Books She Cooks; Jamie Kennedy '74, author and owner of three popular Toronto restaurants; and Terry Jacobs Walters '84, health counselor and author of Clean Food.
Other afternoon activities included the State of the School address by Sheila Culbert, a memorial service led by Reverand Richard Morgan '59, and the
Reunion Volunteer Recognition Reception. Then each class had their dinners all over campus Saturday night followed by an all-class
dessert and dance.
