For many years, The Loomis Chaffee School has been known for its excellent girls swimming, diving, and
water polo programs. In swimming, the Pelicans consistently finish among the top schools at the New
England Championships and have captured seven New England Championships as well as having won sixteen Bud Erich Invitationals (Western New England Championships). More than thirty swimming and diving All-Americans have graduated from Loomis Chaffee in recent years, most recently Samantha Pierce
’12, a 2010 All-American in the 200 yard freestyle.
In addition, swimming/water polo graduates have gone on to compete for collegiate programs such as Amherst, Babson, Bates, Bowdoin, Bucknell, Colorado College, Columbia, Connecticut College, Emory, George Washington, Hamilton, Harvard, Holy Cross, Loyola, MIT, UMBC, Pomona-Pitzer, Princeton, Providence, Rochester, Skidmore, Smith, Trinity,Tufts, UMass, Union, United States Naval Academy, Villanova, Washington & Lee, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Wheaton, Whittier, and Williams. In 2007, the Pelicans finished the season strong with their seventh New England Championship! Loomis has also won eleven Founders League Championships over the past fifteen years. Over the past years, Loomis has finished in the top four at New England’s six times. The
team is also consistently ranked among the top 10 teams in the NISCA National Dual Meet Team Rankings. In addition to the winter program, most swimmers compete on the Water Polo team during the Spring Term. Loomis Chaffee female water polo players have been named to All-American teams in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012. In the past fifteen years, fifteen members of the team have been selected as members of the Northeast Zone Youth and Junior (18 & under) Teams, competing for a spot on the National Youth or Junior Team. The Spring 2013 team was composed of experienced, hard working athletes and once again established itself as one of the best programs in the Northeast. This spring the team will once again set its sights on the top spot!
The Benjamin van Doren Hedges Swimming Pool provides an excellent training facility. The six-lane, 25 meter pool is equipped with Kiefer lane lines, Colorado timing with 6 lane readout, angled starting platforms, an electronic digital pace clock, and both one and three meter maxi-duraflex diving boards. Video equipment, fitness center and separate weight room, Vasa swim bench, stretch cords, and medicine balls, complete the comprehensive training center. A medical staff including three full time trainers, a physical therapist and staff physicians provide each swimmer and water polo player with proper medical attention.
The coaching staff is composed of experienced and enthusiastic coaches. Robert A. DeConinck, Jr. is in his sixteenth year as Head Coach of Girls Swimming and Diving at Loomis Chaffee. Coach DeConinck was also the head coach of the girls water polo team for thirteen years, winning three New England titles during his tenure. Before coming to Loomis Chaffee, Mr. DeConinck coached and taught for 12 years at The Hill School (PA), where he coached numerous All-Americans in both swimming and water polo. He also has had extensive experience in age-group swimming and water polo and served as the Head Coach of the Zone 1 Youth (under 18) Girls Water Polo Team for eight years. For many years, Coach DeConinck has served on the camp staffs at the United States Naval Academy, Princeton University, Hamilton College, and the University of Massachusetts. Coach DeConinck is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he was a four-year member of the swimming and water polo teams as well as captain of both sports. Coach DeConinck has a Masters Degree from West Chester University, PA.
Assisting Coach DeConinck are Liz Bucceri, LC ‘07, an NCAA Div. III National qualifier from Hamilton College and Memo Alejandro. Coach Memo handles the diving coaching duties during the winter. Intensive training and ample instruction for each individual swimmer and diver is assured.
