Girls Water Polo at Loomis Chaffee dates back to the late-70's when Coach Bob Hartman created one of the first high school programs in New England. This co-ed team eventually split into girls and boys varsity programs in the mid -90's with both teams having consistent success in their respective leagues. Under Head Coach Bob DeConinck, the girls won the New England Prep School Championship Tournament in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and finished 2nd in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2011.
While the team’s record in 2013 was 1-15, the daily improvement both in terms of individual skill development and the ability to play as a team was significant, and the enthusiasm for the sport and the joy the girls shared being with each other never wavered. Sophomore Krystal Sung and freshman Izzy Hanson emerged as the team’s primary offensive weapons, while the defense really gained some effectiveness and confidence as the season progressed. Early season defeats to Hopkins, Exeter, Andover, Greenwich High and Choate, though lopsided, were highlighted with stretches of strong play. The Pelicans put all the pieces of the puzzle together to earn a decisive victory over Williston and then culminated the season with a tightly contested game against Suffield and two very strong efforts against Andover and Choate – both ended in one goal losses. The 2014 Pelicans, still a young squad in the process of maturing, is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. Junior captains Krystal Sung and Sarah Pipernos are joined by junior Penelope Shao and a strong core of sophomores (Hanson, Elaine Dealy, Summer Schuster, Ruthie Kornblatt-Stier and Vanessa Young) and an enthusiastic group of new teammates. The team is taking aim at qualifying for the post-season tournament by continuing to practice thoughtfully and diligently, preparing with a sense of purpose for each Wednesday and Saturday competition.
