Michelle Obama surprised everyone at the inaugural ball in 2009 when she wore a one-shouldered white dress by fashion designer and Loomis Chaffee alumnus Jason Wu. This year, she surprised the crowd again at the unveiling of her inaugural gown choice – a long, halter-neck ruby chiffon with velvet details and a plunging back – another Jason Wu creation. Jason, who graduated LC in 2001, has cemented his place among elite fashion designers, from dressing celebrities hitting the red carpet, such as Diane Kruger, Reese Witherspoon, and Zoe Saldana to a line at Target. His 2012 collection immediately sold out of stores.
