At Loomis Chaffee, our mission is to inspire in students a commitment to the best self and the common good.

Through rigorous academic programs, myriad opportunities to put learning into practice, championship-level athletics, expansive performing and visual arts programs, and all the distinct benefits of a top-ranked boarding school, we empower students to reach their goals and make a real and immediate difference in the world.

Beyond academic excellence, what makes Loomis truly special are the people — our students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni — who create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive community that values and respects you for who you are and who you want to become.

“I feel that Loomis had more of an impact on my life and who I’ve become as a person than any other education chapter that I’ve had.”

This is who we are.

Loomis Chaffee students come from all over the world with diverse backgrounds, interests, talents, and dreams. Their journeys are unique, but they all learn to ...

Welcome the Challenge

Our students embrace the challenge of academic excellence, pursuing individual interests and goals as they support those of their classmates and friends.

Lead with Confidence

Our students know their own minds, consider different perspectives, and take civic-minded action as leaders on campus, at college, and in the wider world.

Embrace their Individuality

Our students value individuality, and our faculty want you to be your best self.

Work toward Positive Change

Our students seek out opportunities to effect positive change in their own lives and the lives of others.

Our motto: Ne cede malis.
Yield not to adversity.

“Our motto urges us not to surrender to adversity, but Homer adds sed contra(au)dentior ito: go forth more boldly. Do not give in to adversity. Be active and engaged. Stand up and be counted. We want Loomis students to go forth boldly.

Sheila Culbert Seventh Head of School

A legacy of resilience and belonging

The Loomis Institute was chartered in 1874 by five siblings who had lost all their children and selflessly determined to establish a school as a gift to the children of others.

Freshmen orientation

Since its opening in 1914, the school has adhered to and honored its founders’ wishes to offer educational opportunities for students regardless of religious or political beliefs, gender, national origin, or financial resources.

Today’s school embraces diversity in all its forms and attracts students from around the world, all of whom are eager to pursue excellence in and out of the classroom within a supportive and welcoming community.

“On my first visit to the Island, Loomis’ strong sense of community was unparalleled. During my tour, I realized that this community is about individuality as much as it is about belonging— LC inspired me to find my own identity in a diverse community.”
