The boys varsity swimming team defeated Avon Old Farms 100-63 on Wednesday, December 11, in the season opener.
The meet started off in tremendous fashion for the Pelicans as they captured first and second place in the 200-meter medley relay, thanks to the teams of senior Min Jun Jung, junior Justin Wu, sophomore Nick Guenther, and junior Kai Shen Tham (first place) and senior Gus Hawley, junior Matt Ryckman, senior Mac Pahl, and junior Jake Lotreck (second place). Sophomores Drew Boutry and Ryan Fortani sustained the momentum with another 1-2 finish in the 200-meter freestyle, and Jung and Lotreck continued the trend with a 1-2 finish in the 200-meter individual medley.
The Pelicans delivered an unprecedented fourth 1-2 punch later in the meet as junior Kai Shen Tham and freshman Keadon Freston swam to the gold and silver in the 50-meter free. In the diving event, sophomore Liam Hochman, senior Anthony Lo, and sophomore Henry Wang made impressive season debuts.
Another highlight of the meet was Guenther’s three-win day. After helping his relay team to victory in the opening event, he went on to win both the 100-meter butterfly and the 500-meter freestyle.
Up next, the Pelicans swim in their first home meet of the season on Saturday, December 14, against an always competitive Phillips Exeter Academy. You can watch the meet live on the Loomis Chaffee athletics livestreaming page.
