The boys varsity football team defeated Phillips Andover 28-18 on Saturday, September 21, to even its record at 1-1. The win is the first for new head coach Jeff Moore.
Despite a long bus ride to Andover, the Pelicans showed no signs off weariness and scored the first points of the game thanks to a 32-yard touchdown run by senior Mike Saliba. Andover responded with three straight passing touchdowns of its own. The Pelicans’ goal line defense and special teams did a nice job denying all three of Andover’s extra-point attempts, and with five minutes left in the first half, the Pelicans found themselves down 18-7.
The Pelicans were able to cut into the deficit before the end of the half, though, when junior quarterback Jack Alexander connected with senior wideout Seth Robertson for a 22-yard touchdown with only a few seconds on the clock.
The second half was an entirely different game as the Pelicans dominated both sides of the ball and held Andover scoreless. Junior Kevin Luke added another touchdown to the board when he made a great catch for a 24-yard touchdown, and Saliba went on to scamper for another rushing touchdown.
Sophomore linebacker Sam Wade sealed the victory for the Pelicans when he picked off a pass from the Andover quarterback late in the fourth quarter.
Up next, the Pelicans host Trinity Pawling on Pratt Field on Saturday, September 28, at 3:30 pm.
Individual stats from the game can be found in the team’s game recap.
