The girls varsity basketball team defeated Buckingham Browne & Nichols 49 to 33 on Wednesday, March 5, advancing to the Class A New England Prep School Athletic Conference semifinal for the second straight year.
Having never faced BB&N before, the Pelicans prepared for a variety of play, and that depth of preparation served them well on both ends of the court. They moved the ball well, looked confident on offense, and dealt ably on defense with several different offensive sets that BB&N threw at them.
The first half was close as both teams had success shooting from the paint and hit timely three-point shots, including a couple of baskets from junior Anahi Lee Cauley and sophomore Emily Collins that gave the Pelicans a 27-23 lead going into the second half.
In the second half Loomis tightened up on defense, slowing down the BB&N offense and limiting the Knights to 10 points in the half. Loomis also began feeding the ball to senior Cassie Hawthorne in the paint, who finished the game with 19 points and 14 rebounds, an impressive double-double.
In the semifinals, the Pelicans take on the Tilton School on Saturday, Match 7 at 2 p.m. at Tilton in New Hampshire. Earlier in the year the Pelicans fell to the Rams 48-61.
