The girls golf team successfully defended its New England championship at the 34th Pippy O'Connor Independent School Classic on Monday, May 13, at the Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington, Mass.
Against a tough field of 10 teams, the Pelicans' top four scorers combined for a total score of 303, defeating second place Greenwich Academy by six strokes to secure Loomis Chaffee's second straight New England title. Among the competitive field of 68 golfers, sophomore Nalinda Wanikpun's 71 earned her third place as an individual, and senior captain Maddie Hong tied for eighth place.
In overcast, cold, and windy conditions Hong teed off first for the Pelicans, followed by Wakipun, sophomore Joy Liu, senior captains Christiana Bevelacqua and Elena Anderson, and senior Julia Deitelbaum.
The tough conditions made for a slow day, as the groups began to catch up to one another, making it hard for players to get into their normal rhythm, and about halfway through the match, with Hong on the 12th hole and Liu on the seventh hole, the rain began to fall.
Despite all the challenges the entire team persevered and finished a wet, slow, and rainy day of golf with incredible rounds. The scores were:
Nalinda Wanikpun - 71
Maddie Hong - 76
Joy Liu - 77
Christiana Bevilacqua - 79
Elena Anderson - 85
Julia Deitelbaum - 88
Official scores and places for both teams and individuals are also posted online.
The girls compete in the Founders League Championship on Wednesday, May 22, at the Watertown Golf Club to close out the season.
