The girls varsity ice hockey team defeated Deerfield 2-0 on Saturday, February 29, to clinch a spot in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference’s Chuck Vernon Elite Eight Girls Ice Hockey Tournament, a championship tournament named after former Loomis girls hockey coach.
The team came out strong in the first period and put pressure on Deerfield all over the ice. The Pelicans’ hard work paid off when senior captain Jenna Donohue scored a powerplay goal, firing a puck from the point past the Deerfield goalie.
In the second period, the Pelicans maintained their pressure and found the back of the net again. This time it was sophomore Zoe Pincelli who scored, rifling a puck through traffic at the top of the slot into the upper corner of the net.
In the third period junior goaltender Grace Caligiuri stood strong and turned aside every Deerfield shot she faced, securing the shutout and helping to build positive momentum for when the girls take on Tabor Academy on Wednesday, March 4, in the first round of the tournament. The game will take place at Tabor at 4:30 p.m.
