Girls Hockey Tops Hotchkiss in Tight Contest

The girls varsity ice hockey team defeated Hotchkiss 2-1 on Wednesday, February 12, to open the final third of the season.

The Pelicans got on the board early in the game when sophomore Cally Dixon scored in the slot after receiving a nice pass from freshman Maggie Johnson. The Pelicans had several other opportunities in the first period but weren’t able to capitalize, especially because of the play of the Hotchkiss goaltender.

Loomis added to its lead in the second period when senior Jenna Donohue made a nice individual effort, beat two defensemen, and tucked the puck into the back of the net. The Pelicans held onto the lead going into the third despite some heavy pressure from the Bearcats.

Hotchkiss eventually broke through and scored a goal midway through the third period, but the Pelicans made some adjustments and were able to keep Hotchkiss in its defensive zone with good forechecking and puck pressure. The Pelicans defensemen also did a great job of forcing turnovers in the neutral zone and made it difficult for Hotchkiss to get clean entry into the offensive zone.

Junior goalies Grace Caligiuri and Elinor Keehn combined for 11 saves in the win, kicking off a big three-game week for the Pelicans, who host Cushing on Friday night, February 14, at 6 p.m. and Choate on Saturday, February 15, at 3 p.m.
