Girls Volleyball Wins Big on Dig Pink Night

The girls varsity volleyball team defeated Suffield Academy in straight sets on Friday, October 25, during its Dig Pink fundraiser game in support of breast cancer awareness.

In the week leading up to the game, the team sold T-shirts, baked goods, and other items to help raise more than $1,000 towards the cause, and at the game the gym was filled with players, fans, and students covered in all sorts of pink apparel.

Playing in the Olcott Center for the first time this season, the team jumped out to an early lead thanks to accurate serving from senior captain Gabby Kozik and a strong net presence from sophomore Carys Baker. With a double digit lead halfway through the first set, senior Carol Yu stepped into the game and excited the crowd with several impressive digs, including a diving one-handed pass that resulted in an impressive kill from junior Anahi-Lee Cauley. The big play helped to finish the first set 25-6 in favor of the Pelicans.

With the crowd behind them and their confidence high, the team went on to dominate in the next two sets, 25-13 and 25-9, to defeat the Tigers. Junior Miriam Bussell and first-time varsity member sophomore Sydney Hanley put on epic performances, commanding the floor and striking the ball well.

Up next, the team takes a short road trip to Kingswood Oxford to take on the Wyverns at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30.
