The girls varsity volleyball team won in straight sets on Wednesday, November 6, against Hotchkiss School in the Olcott Center, as the Pelicans celebrated their seniors, who played in their last regular-season home game.
After recognizing the five seniors on the team, captains Sadie Olcott, Gabriele Kozik, and Sky Hanley, along with Carol Yu and Chloe Behringer, the Pelicans quickly refocused and came out strong, building an early 5-0 lead in the first set.
Hotchkiss countered and fought back to tie the set at 12 and then surged for a 14-12 lead, but Yu went on a four-point serving run to get the lead back for the Pelicans. From there, Loomis pushed forward for a 25-17 win in the set.
The second set started off in similar fashion with Loomis taking a 5-1 lead, but Hotchkiss narrowed the lead to 6-5 with gritty play in the front row. Loomis countered with impressive rallies and kills of their own to build a 12-5 lead and cruised from there to a 25-19 victory in the second set.
The third and final set of the match was by far the Pelicans’ best, as they were able to minimize their errors and built 6-0, 9-1, and 13-3 leads in the set. They maintained that pressure through the entire set and finished the match with a 25-14 win.
Up next, the team plays in its final game of the regular season at Kent on Saturday, November 9, at 2:30 p.m., before they begin their defense of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class A championship on Wednesday, November 13. The location and time of the tournament game are yet to be determined.
