The Loomis Chaffee girls cross country team prevailed 25-32 over a strong and competitive squad from Greenwich Academy on Saturday, October 19, in the final home meet of the season.
Red and white balloons, festive posters, and commemorative orange cones signed by all members of the Loomis team greeted the team’s four seniors for the last home meet of their high school careers, thanks to the devoted planning and preparations of their younger teammates. And sunny skies, temperatures in the low 60s, and dry terrain made for ideal racing conditions.
Especially exciting was the fact that all four seniors ran strong races. Neala Sweeney won the race with a time of 19:39, while Emma Tishler placed fourth overall and second for Loomis in 20:14. Jean Shin surged mid-race to score crucial points as the No. 5 Pelican, with a time of 23:48, and Anna MacLean scored for the JV squad, placing 20th overall with a time of 26:26.
Loomis and Greenwich singlets mixed evenly at the front of the field, and with three runners from each team in the finish chute, the score was 10-11 with the Pelicans holding a slight edge as the rest of the field neared the finish line.
Team depth secured the victory for the Pelicans, as the home team placed five runners ahead of Greenwich’s No. 4 runner to secure the 25-32 win.
The team turns its attention next to the Shaler Invitational at Williston-Northampton on Saturday, October 26, with the varsity race starting at 3:15 p.m. and JV race at 4:30 p.m.
