Congratulations to these student athletes for being named Pelicans of the Week by their coaches. The honor is given to students who stand out on the playing field as well as those who act as excellent teammates.
Girls JV Basketball
Freshmen Inari Barrett, Mattie Wright, and Delaney Denno
Three players are recognized this week for their contributions during practices and in the first game of 2020. Inari and Mattie proved to be extraordinary teammates as they enthusiastically rallied the JV squad through sprints and drills last week. They are loud, they are positive, and they bring the best out of their teammates with encouragement and by meeting the high standards they set for themselves each day. Inari and Mattie are also skilled players, and both had a hand in Saturday’s 39-2 win over Kent. Delaney worked with equal determination on all aspects of her game last week, has made great strides with her shooting, and always comes ready to give 100 percent. She was particularly impressive on defense against Kent and forced some turnovers that the Pelicans converted to points. Thanks to all 14 of the JV players for their tremendous work ethic and for keeping it fun every day.
Boys Varsity Ice Hockey
Senior Alex Krause
In a big win over Kent, Alex had without a doubt his best game of the season. He was all over the ice, creating opportunities with and without the puck, and was committed to the game plan for a full 54 minutes. He forechecked hard, got pucks deep, and even blocked a couple of shots late in the game, something you don’t often see from him. His commitment to our game plan also earned him an assist and a goal in the game, with his goal coming off of a play we practice every day. With a big smile on his face after the goal, he even shouted to the team, “Trust the Process, boys!” It was a fun moment for everyone on the team. Congratulations, Krause! Keep it up.
Boys III Basketball
Freshman Nate Cobery
Through the early season, Nate has been our most alert and heads-up player. In a squad of totally new players, he has been a leader on the floor and in practice. His sports IQ is very high, and he sees the floor as well as anyone we play against. We look forward to a continued strong contribution from him throughout the season. Great job, Nate!
Girls JV Squash
Freshman Hana Elmousely
Hana put in a consistent effort in practice over the course of the week, performing well in challenge matches and preparing for our Saturday match against Kent. During her match against her Kent opponent, Hana took a solid 2-0 lead (11-9, 11-5). Her opponent fought back to even out the match 2-2 (11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 8-11). At this point, a player’s mental strength is key, and Hana stayed calm, served well, and focused on moving her opponent out wide to secure the fifth game 11-6 for a 3-2 win. Great job, Hana!
