The girls varsity volleyball team defeated St. Paul’s 3-0 on Wednesday, November 13, to advance to the New England Prep School Athletic Conference semifinals on Saturday, November 16, when they will face second-seeded Hopkins School in New Haven, Conn., at 2:30 p.m.
Loomis got off to a quick start in the first set, taking a 4-1 and then 10-5 lead thanks to heavy hitting at the net, but St. Paul’s countered and fought back to narrow the lead to 11-10 as Loomis struggled to receive serves.
With the score tied at 13, senior captain Gabby Kozik earned a big kill and then served Loomis to a 20-13 lead. Juniors Anahi Cauley and Loren Jones closed out the game with big kills to win the first set 25-18.
The second set had a similar feel to the first as Loomis jumped out to a 6-1 lead. St. Paul’s recovered with strong hitting and solid defense and tied the game at eight. Cauley regained the momentum, though, after another big kill, and Loomis surged to a 13-8 lead. St. Paul’s stayed within striking distance, bringing the score to 17-15 and then 20-18. Critical kills by Cauley late in the set preserved a 25-20 victory.
In the third set, St. Paul’s came out attacking and built a leads, but Loomis continued to fight, getting a big contribution from senior Chloe Behringer, who had two aces during her serving run to narrow the score.
Loomis eventually tied the set at 17 and took the lead after a big play from senior Sadie Olcott. From there, Loomis got late kills from senior captain Sky Hanley (team-high 10 kills for the match) and a big kill from the backrow from Behringer as Loomis took the deciding set 25-21.
Saturday’s semifinal against Hopkins will be a rematch from the regular season, when the Pelicans lost 0-3. Livestream information will be available later in the week.
