The girls varsity volleyball team officially christened the newly finished Olcott Center floor by defeating Northfield Mount Hermon 3-0 on Wednesday, September 18.
Back-and-forth action and very efficient hitting from Loomis defined the beginning of the first set, as senior Sky Hanley, sophomores Em Collins and Carys Baker, and junior Loren Jones recorded kills en route to a 4-4 tie. Loomis then went on three consecutive serving runs to build a 15-6 lead. From there Loomis was able to cruise to a 25-12 set victory.
In the second set, the Pelicans eventually strung together a 10-point scoring run thanks to terrific serving from senior Chloe Behringer, giving the Pelicans a 16-4 lead. Freshman Kori Messiner then stepped to the serving line and recorded two straight aces, leading to an eight-point run and handing Loomis a 25-7 win in the second set.
Serving was the story of the day for the Pelicans, as senior captain Gabriele Kozik tacked five consecutive aces to start off set three, and her efforts were followed by senior captain Sadie Olcott, who added two more aces to give the Pelicans a 12-3 lead. NMH fought back and evened the score, but the Pelicans regained their composure and clinched the match with a 25-17 win in the third and final set.
Individual statistics can be found in the game recap posted on the team’s webpage.
Up next, the Pelicans take on an always talented Phillips Andover squad at Andover on Saturday, September 21, at 2:30 p.m.
