Jeff Scanlon '79 Named 2019 Teacher of the Year

Loomis Chaffee recognized students for their academic and extracurricular achievements and for their contributions to the school and greater community at an All-School Awards convocation on Tuesday, May 21, in the Olcott Center. After the student award presentations, the Student Council announced the selection of English teacher Jeff Scanlon '79 as 2019 Teacher of the Year.

The assembly opened with the induction of 41 seniors into the Cum Laude Society — a century-old fellowship of scholars that recognizes academic achievement in secondary schools.

Associate Head of School Webb Trenchard then announced the 12 members of the junior class who were awarded this year's Founders Prizes. Recipients are elected by the faculty in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and significant contributions to the Loomis community. Webb read a personalized citation for each Founders Prize recipient.

Webb then presented awards to outstanding juniors and seniors in each department and special awards for excellence in other areas of school life, including journalism, community service, and creation and support of an inclusive school community. The Carling Prize, awarded to a freshman or sophomore for essay-writing about modern democracy, also was presented.

After the awards presentations, senior Lucy Shao, outgoing Student Council president, shared some of the Student Council's accomplishments from this year and urged members of the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes to take active roles in Student Council in the years ahead. Lucy passed the ceremonial gavel to junior Maral Asik, the newly-elected Student Council president for the 2019–20 school year. Maral encouraged her fellow Pelicans to "think critically" over the summer about their Loomis Chaffee experience and reach out to Student Council members to help find solutions to problems or make suggestions for improvements.

Lucy then presented the Teacher of the Year Award to Jeff, who has taught English for the last 33 years and served in many other roles, including as English Department Head, Summer Program director, advisor, mentor, and coach. Jeff, an alumnus himself, is also a parent of two alumnae.

Lucy read from the nominating essay for Jeff, submitted by sophomore Victoria Che, who wrote that she is grateful for having Jeff as her English teacher because he helped her discover "the beauty of life through the lens of literature."
