Vital Fundraising by Student-led Club

With funds raised at an on-campus event this winter, junior Nicole Ramenda, leader of Loomis Chaffee’s Race for the Race Club, purchased and delivered nine boxes of nonperishable food to the charitable organization Gifts of Love in Avon, Conn., this week.

Race for the Race, founded by Nicole last fall, hosted a Mario Kart video game tournament in the Pearse Hub for Innovation (PHI) on January 31. The tournament raised money to purchase food donations for Gifts of Love.

Nicole conceived the idea in the fall, before the COVID-19 crisis, according to Heather Henderson, director of Community Service Programs at Loomis.

“We didn’t know how vitally important this donation would turn out to be,” Heather said.

Gifts of Love is an established nonprofit organization that distributes food, clothing, and household items to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship in Greater Hartford. Nicole has volunteered regularly at Gifts of Love since her freshman year and looks forward to future opportunities to support the organization’s work in the community.
