Loomis Chaffee recognized students for their academic and extracurricular achievements and for their contributions to the school and greater community at the 2018 All-School Awards convocation Tuesday, May 22, in the Olcott Center. After the student award presentations, the Student Council announced the selection of Adnan Rubai as Teacher of the Year.
The assembly opened with the induction of 40 seniors into the Cum Laude Society — a century-old fellowship of scholars that recognizes academic achievement in secondary schools.
Associate Head of School Webb Trenchard then announced this year's 15 Founders Prize recipients and read a citation for each student. Founders Prizes are awarded to juniors who are elected by the faculty in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and significant contributions to the Loomis community.
After the Founders Prizes, Webb presented awards to outstanding juniors and seniors in each department and special awards for excellence in other areas of school life, including journalism, community service, and creation and support of an inclusive school community.
After the awards ceremony, senior Sarah Bennett, outgoing Student Council co-president, thanked her fellow council officers, Julia Thompson and Andrew Schreibstein, and acknowledged the students and faculty who engaged with the council and continued to promote positive changes in the school community. As she passed the ceremonial gavel to junior Lucy Shao, the newly-elected Student Council president for the 2018–19 school year, Sarah encouraged Lucy and the rest of the Student Council to adopt a mindset of, "I will promote the change I believe in today, and tomorrow I am going to have an impact."
Lucy encouraged her fellow students to take an active role in Student Council next year and to continue to share opinions with and channel ideas to their class representatives.
Together, Sarah, Andrew, and Julia presented the Teacher of the Year Award to math teacher Adnan Rubai, who is also assistant head of the Math Department, girls assistant track coach, and dorm faculty member. Adnan was selected by the Student Council from a number of written nomination essays submitted by students.
Julia read from the nominating essay for Adnan, written by senior Lauren Hinton: "Mr. Rubai's math class has instilled in me a confidence in my mathematical abilities that I did not have before. I am grateful for having had him as a teacher because he understands that learning demands patience, persistence, and hard work."Connect to a complete listing of the 2018 All-School Awards.
