It was another beautiful day for baseball on Sellers Field for the boys varsity baseball season finale against Taft. Craig Lamenzo, the man in charge of maintaining the athletics grounds had the field looking spectacular and made a special effort to honor our eight seniors, putting their numbers around home plate on the Loomis side.
The Pelicans entered the game with a 13-2 league record atop the standings. A victory would seal the first-place finish, crown the Pelicans Founders League champions, and give the senior class its third league championship.
The seniors include Justin Pacheco, Will Thramann, Jack Scher, Andrew Cohen, Cam Morosky, Zach Minch, Connor Leighton, and Josh Katz.
Loomis got things started in the first inning with a single by Scher. His effort was followed up by Pacheco, who forced a Taft error, allowing Scher to move to third. Morosky then stepped up to the plate and took a chop at a pitch that struck the end of his bat in a strange manner, sending the ball back towards the pitcher.
Scher made a great read on the ball from third base and aggressively ran to home plate, making a head-first slide to the outside corner of the plate, avoiding a tag to score the first run and allow Morosky to safely reach first base.
A hit by sophomore Evan Varga drove in Pacheco and moved Morosky to third.
The Pelicans then loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to score, giving them a 2-0 lead early.
In the second inning, Leighton laced a ball to deep left center that hopped the fence for a ground-rule double. Thramann drew a walk, and Scher drew his 17th hit by pitch of the season, loading the bases for pitcher Justin Pacheco.
Pacheco smacked a double to score two more runs, and Varga forced a fielder's choice play that pushed across Scher for the team's fifth run of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Varga drove in his third run of the game, pushing Thramann across the plate for Thramann's 22nd run of the season, and the final run of the season for the Pelicans.
Pacheco threw a gem on the mound for the Pelicans. In his seventh and final start for Loomis, he earned his seventh win, striking out 12 Rhino batters and allowing zero earned runs in the complete-game victory. His performance put his season earned-run average at 1.71. It was only fitting that Pacheco's last pitch on the mound was a strike out, and the Pelicans soared onto the field to celebrate their third consecutive league title.
After the game the team enjoyed great barbecue put on by the wonderful Pelican parents, and there was a ceremony honoring the seniors and highlighting the impact they had on the culture of the team.
