The boys varsity track and field team opened its season with a 94-51 win against Avon Old Farms on Saturday, April 13, at home on the Wilde Track.
After almost a month of training, it was clear that the Pelicans were ready for the contest, as they jumped out to an early 40-point lead. Needing 73 points to win the meet, the team was able to reach that threshold and cruise to a victory thanks to important finishes from many on the squad.
First-place finishers included sophomore Alejandro Rincon (1500 meters, 3000 meters), junior Seth Robertson (110-meter high hurdles, 300-intermediate hurdles), senior Sam Winiarksi (400 meters), senior captain Adam Jannetti (high jump), junior Matt Farrell (800 meters), and senior Tyler Delgado (javelin). The Pelicans' 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams also recorded victories. Several newcomers also earned points for the Pelicans in their first meet, as seniors Brady Trenchard, Kevin Cosgel, and Matt Remigino; and sophomores Heisen Kong and Daniel Graham placed among the top three in their events.
"It should be noted that both teams were missing key athletes for a variety of reasons, but both teams showed they have the depth to make another run at the Founders League title as well as the New England championships," according to assistant coach Andrew Bartlett.
Up next, the Pelicans will travel to Taft on Wednesday, April 24, for a 3 p.m. matchup against the Rhinos.
