The girls varsity basketball team defeated Hotchkiss School 58-21 on Wednesday, February 26, in Olcott Gym, picking up another Founders League win for the team’s four seniors in their last regular season home game of their Loomis Chaffee basketball careers.
Before the game, the team decorated the gym with posters and photos of seniors Bry Johnson, Sky Hanley, Cassie Hawthorne, and Abby Cannon. Prior to tip-off, Head Coach Adrian Stewart delivered speeches about each senior, thanking them for all they have done for the girls varsity basketball program.
Despite the excitement around senior day, the girls got off to a slow start in the first quarter, with multiple offensive turnovers.
The second quarter was an entirely different story though, as the Pelicans refocused themselves and moved the ball up the court with precision, opening up lanes and allowing for easy baskets.
Senior Cassie Hawthorne led the way on offense, posting an 18-point, 15 rebound double-double, while senior Bry Johnson put up eight points, six rebounds, and five steals. Senior Sky Hanley also had a big day with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Up next for the Pelicans is a big game against Founders League foe Miss Porter’s School on Saturday, February 29, at 5 p.m. at Miss Porters. After that game the girls will take part in the Class A New England championships. The first round of that tournament will take place on Wednesday, March 4. The Pelicans’ tournament seeding and time and location of the game will be determined in the coming days.
