Four Loomis varsity teams — girls and boys basketball, boys swimming and diving, and girls ice hockey — captured Founders League titles with victories over the weekend.
With a win against Miss Porter's School on Friday, February 23, the girls basketball team captured its fifth consecutive Founders League championship. The girls did not drop a single game to Founders League opponents this winter and will face Tilton Academy in New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class A postseason play on Wednesday, February 28, at 3 PM as the fifth seed in the tournament.
The boys basketball team also went undefeated in Founders League play. The team also is the first seed in the NEPSAC Class A Tournament and will host Tabor Academy in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, February 28 at 3:30 PM.
Perhaps the most exciting of Founders League championships, though, was that of the boys swim team at the championship meet on Saturday. The Pelicans stunned Choate, which was the favorite to win, with an impressive team effort. Every Pelican have his best day of racing. "Rarely have I witnessed such energy, enthusiasm, and determination for the duration of a long day of championship racing as I witnessed from our boys on Saturday," Coach Fred Seebeck said.
The girls hockey team captured the second consecutive Founders League title this year, dropping only two games to Taft during the season. Otherwise, the Pelicans went unbeaten against Founders League opponents. The Founders League title helped the girls earn home ice in the first round of NEPSAC Division I playoffs, where they will host St Paul's School in the battle of the Pelicans. The game will be played Wednesday, February 28, at 3 PM.
Post-season play for these four teams as well as boys ice hockey and girls swimming and diving will continue this week. Visit the Loomis athletics website for details.
