Singer-songwriter Juliana Just Costa '09 and her brother, Jesse Just Costa, were guest musicians and presented an evening concert of acoustic world music on the Island on Friday, November 6.
Raised in a Canadian-Brazilian family, the siblings, who perform as the musical duo Juliana & Jesse, create a rich, blended sound that is roots-based and infused with pop and world beat rhythms.
Since performing as contestants on the Canadian talent show La Voix (The Voice) in 2016, Juliana & Jesse have been featured in numerous media outlets and have given more than 400 performances. In the fall of 2017, the duo performed at the MUZ showcase in Montreal, where they won three People's Choice Awards. They followed that event with a 16-date tour of Italy that ended in March of this year.
Their debut album, In Time, All Things, is a collection of songs that varies in genre and mood, ranging from light-hearted and carefree to thoughtful and introspective. The album's message, "in time, all things do find their place," is embraced by the two musicians and draws from their collective experiences.
While at Loomis, Juliana was a prefect in Carter Hall, a resident assistant in Palmer Hall, and a tri-varsity athlete in girls soccer, ice hockey, and track.
"I was really more into being an athlete when I was here," remarked Juliana during her visit. "I just played guitar in my dorm room." After earning a bachelor's degree from McGill University, Juliana went to work independently as an environmental researcher — work that she continues to pursue in addition to her professional music career. She also coaches ice hockey and soccer at independent schools in Montreal.
Juliana said it was wonderful to return to Loomis Chaffee and see new spaces that have been created since she graduated. "I can't believe this is Chaffee Gym!" she said from the stage of the Hubbard Performance Hall.
In addition to the evening performance in Hubbard, Juliana and her brother shared their experiences with several music ensemble classes and met with a number of music students for individual coaching sessions. They also met with a Spanish class taught by Lilian Castillo de Hutchinson, where they performed selections from their Spanish-language folk music repertoire.
