A Day at the Opera
A group of nearly two dozen music students and faculty, including Music Department Head Susan Chrzanowski, traveled to New York City on January 28 to see a dress rehearsal performance of the Metropolitan Opera's production of Mozart's Don Gionvanni at Lincoln Center. Junior Jei Park, Music Department assistant/student leader, and her mom, Soohee Lee, helped organize the trip and provided lunch. A special thank you goes out to one of Jei's music teachers, Robert Sutherland, chief music librarian for the Metropolitan Opera, who helped arrange for the group to attend.
Student Musicians Participate in Regional Festival
Twenty Loomis Chaffee students were chosen to participate in the Connecticut Music Teachers Association Northern Region Music Festival in January. For most students, preparation for regionals began back in May 2018, according to Music Department Head Susan Chrzanowski. Then, after months of practice, students auditioned in the fall, which included playing or performing scales and arpeggios and sight-reading music they had never seen before. If students scored high enough during their auditions, they were invited to participate in regionals, where they joined the 500 best-scoring players and singers from the region to form a chorus, band, orchestra, and jazz band. According to Wind Ensemble Director David Winer, approximately 1,500 students in the region auditioned.
Performing in the regional chorus were senior Silvia Mayo; juniors Kavya Kolli and Makayla McPherson; and sophomores Brett Donshik, Emma Kane, John Howley, Andy Wu, and Tom Zhang.
Members of the festival orchestra were senior James Wang; juniors Roy Lam and Ethan Levinbook; and sophomores Hannah Adler, Heisen Kong, and Jean Shin.
Performing in the festival band were senior Sam Feifer, junior Becca Yen, sophomores Clara Chen and Eric Zhang, and freshmen Cooper Donovan and Isabella Jiang.
Students selected for regionals were invited to audition for the All-State festival, and Loomis will be sending nine musicians to that event in April. Congratulations to all of the musicians!
