Offense Explodes as Boys Football Soars Past Exeter

The varsity football team captured its first victory of the season on Saturday, defeating Phillips Exeter 40-24 at Exeter with an impressive offensive performance in which the team scored all of its points in the final three quarters of the game.

The game had an inauspicious start for the Pelicans. Sophomore Kamren Watkins-Hunter intercepted an Exeter pass on the home team's first offensive drive, but on the return, he was hit and fumbled the ball into the waiting arms of an Exeter offensive player, who ran it back for a touchdown.

The unlucky play for the Pelicans motivated Exeter, which built on its lead by adding a field goal in the first quarter, taking a 10-0 lead.

The Pelicans were jolted back to life thanks to the efforts of senior Carl Willis, who returned a punt deep into Exeter territory, giving the Pelicans good field position. Senior wideout Denzel Williams then got the Pelicans on the board when he caught a pass from senior quarterback Jack Tishman in the end zone, cutting into the Exeter lead.

Exeter was able to put up six more points before halftime, but senior Tylon Crump made the game a close one going into the second half when he completed a short run into the end zone for the Loomis team's second touchdown of the day, bringing the score to 14-16 in favor of Exeter.

The Pelican offense picked up significantly in the second half, as Crump recorded his second rushing touchdown of the game and tacked on a two-point conversion on a run play to give the Pelicans a 22-16 lead. Junior wideout Seth Robertson reeled in a touchdown pass on the next drive, and the offense completed another two-point conversion to give the Pelicans a 14-point lead.

After junior kicker Peter Lena drilled a lengthy field goal, the Pelicans scored their final touchdown of the night when junior Seth Robertson beat a double team and snagged a ball out of midair in the end zone, receiving a 30-yard pass from Tishman.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Pelicans were led by seniors Tyler Delgado and Tyler MacDonald.

Next up, the team travels to Deerfield Academy for a 3 p.m. matchup on Saturday, October 13, before taking on Williston on October 20 at home on Parents Weekend.
