Departmental Guidelines
Take the time to read the Course Offerings and Descriptions carefully as you begin the process of selecting your academic and athletic program for next year and pay close attention to the diploma requirements listed on page 3.
Using the Four-Year Plan form, choose a program that stays within the guidelines for minimum and maximum credits per term and note pre/co-requisites and permissions needed for classes of interest to you. Discuss your selections with your parents and advisor to be sure that you have made wise and accurate course request choices.
Course requests must be completed by advisors no later than February 17. In the first two weeks of February consult with your family about your planned requests and meet with your advisor to finalize.
Important note regarding courses designated as Advanced, CL or entrance by departmental permission: Each of these scheduling requests is handled individually and reviewed departmentally in consultation with your current teacher. In the event that a student does not receive the necessary departmental approval, the regular section of the course or an alternate selection may be selected. That review process concludes on April 1.
List alternate choices for all electives. While these alternate second (or third) choices are not required for regular year courses (such as English or Biology) or for performance music courses (such as Concert Choir or Orchestra), they are required for Advanced/CL year courses and for all other electives. Second choices do not have to be in the same department as first choices.
- Be sure that each second choice is an appropriate course, one that you would wish to take.
- Do not list a course as both a first choice and a second choice for another course.
- Do not list a more advanced course as a second choice.
- Do not list a course as a second choice if the first choice course is a prerequisite for the second.
Some specific guidelines on course choices:
- Students requesting a different language or math course from the departmental placement should ask their advisor to indicate the request in their “notes” section.
- Juniors are expected to take a US History course: either the regular US History or CL US History. CL US History requires permission of the department.
- Seniors may not select the first level of a foreign language, unless receiving departmental permission.
- Seniors must request six or more English term choices (in preferential order).
- Students are expected to continue studying mathematics beyond Algebra II and Geometry (and to do so through senior year), both to be prepared for standardized testing toward college admission, and for college level mathematics.
After advisors have entered course requests in our registration database the Director of Studies will review selections, consult you for revisions if needed, and mark your final slate of requests as “Approved” when that review is finalized. The actual scheduling occurs over the summer, and we do our best to include your first choice courses. Be mindful, however, that scheduling conflicts do occur, and that there will be cases when second and third choices must be employed.
