AI Initiatives

AI Initiatives

Teaching, learning, and living at Loomis Chaffee are fundamentally human endeavors. That is why our work with artificial intelligence is intentionally human-centered, and our goal is to empower our students to use AI to serve the common good.

A Loomis education develops the critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills students need to engage thoughtfully with AI. We teach students how to work with AI and, just as importantly, prepare them to decide if and when to use it.

Loomis' AI Initiatives program also provides guidelines, support, and resources that our students, faculty, and staff use to better understand AI’s relevance, possibilities, impacts, limitations, and potential harms.

Loomis Chaffee’s AI Philosophy

Guided by our mission and values, whenever we decide to use AI or decline to do so, we act thoughtfully, responsibly, intentionally, and openly. In keeping with these standards, our work will always be guided by human judgment and integrity.

Our goal is to empower our students to use AI to serve the common good.

Studying AI at Loomis Chaffee

Beyond guidelines and tools, AI is a subject of study. These courses invite students to examine the technology itself — how it works, what it costs, and what it means to be human alongside it.

TERM COURSE | Computer Science, Design Thinking & Entrepreneurship

Computer Science: AI and Digital Literacy

A non-coding, hands-on exploration of artificial intelligence. Focusing on large language models, students examine AI’s capabilities, opportunities, and ethical implications — and its impact on privacy, fairness, and society.

Term Course | Interdisciplinary | GESC

AI and Climate: Promise and Price

This course examines AI as both environmental challenge and potential solution. Students investigate the material costs of AI systems — energy, water, mineral extraction — alongside AI applications in climate modeling, renewable energy, and conservation.

CL Senior Writing Seminar | English | Computer Science

Algorithms, AI, and Us

A college-level writing seminar that closely examines the role and impact computers have on the human world — algorithmic bias, the attention economy, data privacy — through writing that engages authentic audiences.

AI in Action

Below are a few examples of students and faculty using AI at Loomis in and out of the classroom and for the common good.

Reducing Food Waste

A student is using computer vision, which enables machines to interpret and understand visual information, to estimate daily variations in food waste in our dining hall, based on menu items. He hopes this information will help the school’s food service director structure weekly menus.

Helping Students Become More Effective AI Users

Three students are developing a browser extension to help other students learn best practices in prompting, AI literacy, and the ethical use of AI by providing real-time feedback on the quality of a user’s prompts.

Creating Interactive Simulations in Genetics

Using AI-assisted coding tools, a science teacher creates interactive simulations for students to help demonstrate complex topics in Genetics class.

Providing Additional Opportunities to Learn from Teacher Feedback

An English teacher has his students take the feedback he gave them on a previous essay and ask the AI tool Flint to create a paragraph that makes the same mistakes that they did so that the students can practice identifying and correcting those issues.
