1916 Football Team

The 1916 football team prepared for its season in one week; fear of an infantile paralysis epidemic delayed school openings across the Northeast by almost a month. Still, the Loomis team defeated a more experienced and stronger Yale freshman squad 6-0. The Loomiscellany described this as a triumph of “courage and skill.”
 

1948 Pelican Field Hockey

The 1948 Chaffee School Pelicans stand before their team banner at the annual fall Pelican-Greyhound athletic contest. This time the Greyhounds would take the game, carried by the offensive skill of Jane Mackay Howe ’49. Field hockey was first played at Chaffee in 1946, replacing soccer as the organized fall sport.
 

1960 Football Season

The opening game’s fourth quarter scoreboard tells the story of the 1960 Loomis football season. Undefeated in seven contests, the squad kicked off the fall with a 50-0 victory over Wilbraham. Tri-captain Pete Cummings ’61 scored 20 points in that game and was a commanding presence for the Pelicans throughout the season.

1980 Great Race

Runners, including Headmaster John Ratté, wait for the start of the 1980 Great Race. A fall tradition begun in 1975, the Great Race was first promoted with a hand written poster: “Everyone connected with Loomis-Chaffee is invited to participate: Boy and girl, students, faculty, employees, friends & dogs. The idea is to run, have a good time, and if possible, to finish. Everyone will receive refreshments."
 

2001 Girls Soccer

“We were on a mission.” So begins the Confluence’s 2001 Girls Varsity soccer season write-up. The Pelicans achieved their goal and more, earning top honors as New England Champions. Seniors Katieanne Christian, Lindsay Bruno and Amy Grady served as captains.
