“Dance is just fancy walking; dance is for everyone!”
Kate Loughlin Director of Dance
There are so many ways to engage with dance at Loomis Chaffee. Our dance program welcomes all interested students, from novices to advanced dancers, and offers classes in technique and composition as well as performance opportunities. During the class day, students can enroll in Art of Dance, Dance Performance Ensemble, and Choreography and Composition; all three courses count toward the school’s arts requirement. After school, the program offers term classes in ballet (fall), hip hop (winter), and jazz (spring) dance techniques as well as Dance Company, an audition-based performance group, all of which meet after-school activities requirements.
Dancers interested in stage performances can enroll in either the daytime Dance Performance Ensemble for intermediate and advanced dancers or audition for the after-school Dance Company for advanced dancers. With two performance-oriented groups available, students find they can dance rigorously and consistently throughout the year while also pursuing other interests, such as athletics, theater, community service, debate, and much more. Both performance groups dance ballet, jazz, contemporary, and tap styles and perform in the Fall Dance Showcase and Spring Dance Revue as well as at special events throughout the year. In the fall, our dancers also participate in a multi-school dance festival, and in the spring we host the New England Prep School Dance Festival, which was created by two Loomis Chaffee students in 2016.
