The incredible breadth of music programs offered at Loomis Chaffee reflects both the interests of our students and the school’s commitment to the arts. We structure our programs so that all music classes and ensembles meet during the class day for academic credit, which enables our students to be as active in music as they like while also pursuing other interests, including athletics, theater, debate, community service, and more as well as their own student-run music-related clubs and pursuits in the evenings.
The program welcomes both experienced and new musicians. Our large ensembles ― Concert Choir, Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band ― are level-inclusive; no auditions are required for these ensembles. For more advanced musicians, our programs include the audition-based Chamber Singers, Chamber Music ensembles, and Jazz Improv group. We offer private vocal and instrumental lessons as well as group classes for beginners in acoustic guitar and piano. In any given year, 85 to 120 students take lessons on campus.
Our faculty encourage and support students who would like to participate in music performance competitions and festivals, including Regionals and All-State. They guide our students through preparation for competition and host a performance night on campus so that students can perform their pieces in front of a friendly and supportive audience before competition.
