Boys Water Polo Defeats Hopkins for First Time in Five Seasons

The Loomis Chaffee boys varsity water polo team earned an 11–9 victory over Hopkins, marking the Pelicans’ first win against the Hilltoppers since 2019.

Loomis opened the game with momentum, as sophomore J.C. Liu won the opening sprint. Senior George DeVos set the tone offensively, scoring a hat trick in the first quarter. On the defensive end, the Pelicans allowed just one goal in the quarter, closing the period with a 3-1 lead.

The second quarter brought more offensive force. Junior Jack Haegele struck quickly with a goal, followed by another from DeVos. First-year Daniel Mirgorodskiy tallied his first career goal for Loomis, helping the Pelicans extend their advantage to 6–3 heading into halftime.

Hopkins responded in the second half, chipping away at the lead. Despite goals from both DeVos and Haegele in the third quarter, Hopkins closed the gap to a single point. By the fourth quarter, Hopkins managed to tie the game at 9–9, even after a late goal from DeVos.

With the game on the line, Mirgorodskiy delivered a decisive power-play goal that secured an 11–9 victory for Loomis.

Several players made critical contributions beyond scoring. Junior Andy Vuong provided two key assists on offense while Liu, junior Tiger Song, and senior Wyeth Andrews each recorded steals. In goal, sophomore Emory Andrews anchored the defense with two steals of his own and 11 saves throughout the game.
