Field Hockey Wins OT Thriller on Kent Day, Qualifies for Tournament

The girls varsity field hockey team defeated Kent 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, November 12, to wrap up the regular season and earn a bid to the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) Class A field hockey championship.

The Pelicans knew they had to win if they wanted to qualify for the Class A championship tournament, and after celebrating the Loomis team's nine seniors in their final home game of the regular season, the battle with the Lions ensued from the opening whistle.

The first half was fast paced, back and forth, and extremely exciting, as both teams created quality opportunities. It wasn’t until the dying minutes of the first half that Loomis Chaffee broke through, when senior Fiona Murphy sent the ball in on a penalty corner and sophomore Katie Sigrist tipped it past the goalie, earning Loomis' first goal.

Kent answered in the second half to tie the score. It took another 20 minutes before the Pelicans responded, with another penalty corner. Sigrist inserted the ball to sophomore Presley Paredes, who rifled a shot home to make the score 2-1.

Kent got a late equalizer with less than two minutes left in regulation time and forced the game into overtime.

In overtime, senior Liz Winemaster made three consecutive saves to keep the Pelicans' playoff hopes alive. Eventually, the Pelicans found their groove and attacked off a quick break, and sophomore Chloe Obser connected with Parades, who scored her second goal of the game and sent Loomis into postseason play.

Up next, the Pelicans travel to Taft as the No. 8 seed to take on the Rhinos in quarterfinal action on Wednesday, November 16, at 2:15 p.m. The game will be livestreamed on the Loomis Chaffee athletics livestream page.
