Girls Basketball Advances to Semifinals with Win against Taft

The girls varsity basketball team defeated Taft 71-49 on Wednesday, March 1, to advance to the NEPSAC Class A semifinals for the fourth straight year.

Sitting at the top of the bracket as the No. 1 seed in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class A Tournament, Loomis Chaffee wasted no time getting things started as the team jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind three pointers from senior Carys Baker and junior Jessica Roy and a quick drive and layup from sophomore Abby Congdon.

Taft responded after a timeout, though, and went on an 8-0 run of its own to tie the score. A big-time three-pointer from junior Ke'iara Odume ended the Rhinos’ run and allowed Loomis to regain control of the game.

In the second quarter, the Pelicans continued to shoot well from beyond the arc, and an impressive day of offensive rebounding from sophomore Liv Westfort helped the Pelicans maintain possession and find the shots they were looking for.

Heading into the second half up 42-28, Loomis didn’t let up and opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run behind two more three-pointers from Roy and layups from Westfort.

When the final whistle had blown, Odume and Baker both had finished the game with 20 points and five other Loomis players had scored at least once.

Up next, the Pelicans take on fourth-seeded Kent School on Saturday, March 4, at 3 p.m. in Olcott Center. The two Founders League rivals faced off at the beginning of the year, and the Pelicans came away with a thrilling 60-58 victory on the road.
