It’s three in a row for the Loomis Chaffee girls basketball team.
The team won the New England Prep School Class A Championship for the third consecutive year on Sunday, March 3, with a 47-39 victory over Kent in the tournament final.
Winning the championship game, held at Noble & Greenough School, was no easy task for the Pelicans. Loomis and Kent had a close game when they met during the regular season, and Kent was tenacious again in the final. However, the Pelicans started strong and didn’t relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. Kent had a number of momentum swings in its favor during the game, cutting the Pelican lead down to single digits multiple times, but the Loomis girls held strong and fought off the Lions each time.
Loomis advanced to the final with a 65-32 defeat of Phillips Andover in the quarterfinals and a 75-51 win over Hotchkiss in the semifinals. Loomis was down 11-0 to Hotchkiss in the beginning of the semifinal but rallied back and led by more than double digits by the halftime buzzer.
The Pelicans also won the Founders League title this season for the second straight year and tallied the best regular-season record in team history at 20-5.
Head coach Adrian Stewart mentioned earlier this season that “the closeness on this team is something unlike I have ever seen before." That closeness showed on the court on Sunday and all season.
