Girls Hockey Defeats Andover in Last Second

No. 3-ranked girls ice hockey took on No. 5-ranked Phillips Andover on Wednesday, February 26, for the second time this season and pulled off a 2-1 win in the final second.

The last time these two teams met was in December, when Loomis Chaffee defeated Andover in a shootout to clinch the PKO Tournament championship.

On Wednesday, Andover struck first, capitalizing on a power play five minutes into the second period.

The Pelicans responded when junior Carly Dann transitioned the puck to junior Lindsay Stepnowski, who fired a shot from the top of the circle. The puck slipped under Andover’s goalie’s glove, and Stepnowski followed up to bury the loose puck, tying the game.

After a tense, mostly scoreless third period, Loomis was awarded a power play with under nine seconds left. Off an offensive-zone faceoff, senior captain Chloe Obser won the puck back to Stepnowski, who dished it to senior Megan Duplantie. Duplantie carried the puck low and fired a quick shot, creating a rebound. She followed up with another shot, setting up Obser to hammer home the game-winner with just 0.6 seconds on the clock.

The team now looks ahead to Senior Day this Saturday at 4 p.m. against No. 10 Deerfield in the Pelicans’ final regular season game.
