The girls varsity lacrosse team improved to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Founders League with a 16-8 victory over Choate Rosemary Hall on Wednesday, April 12, on the Upper Turf.
Looking to build off their last two victories, in which they scored 14 and 19 goals respectively, the team got off to a strong start when senior Fiona Murphy scored a goal in the opening seconds of the game after a nice pass from senior Turner Brode from behind the net.
Choate followed up the Loomis Chaffee goal just a minute later with a tally of its own and then took the lead five minutes later, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Wild Boars.
Undeterred, the Pelicans cleaned things up on both ends of the field and started controlling possession, leading to several scoring opportunities on the offensive end of the field. After a few minutes, the Pelicans broke through and scored back-to-back goals in under a minute to take a 3-2 lead, but another goal from Choate brought the game to a tie with six minutes remaining in the half.
Looking for a way to swing the momentum, senior captain Maggie Bankowski won the ensuing draw and took on the entire Choate defense, blowing past six Choate defenders before firing home a shot on the run to give the Pelicans the lead. The play jolted Loomis to life, and the Pelicans proceeded to score five straight goals in five minutes, taking a 9-3 lead into halftime.
From there, solid defense and a dominant performance from Bankowski on her draw controls allowed Loomis to control the game. Seven different players scored goals in what finished as a 16-8 victory in favor of Loomis.
Bankowski finished the game with four goals and one assist. Murphy had three goals and three assists, and Brode finished with two goals and four assists.
The goalie tandem of senior Sophie Powless and freshman Jordyn Hill-Bucktooth combined for eight saves on the day.
Up next, the team is on the road for another Founders League matchup when they take on Miss Porter’s School on Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m.
