Girls Soccer Wins Quarterfinal with Incredible Comeback

The girls varsity soccer team, seeded fourth in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) Class A tournament, pulled off a comeback to defeat fifth-seeded Worcester Academy 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, November 16, on Barton Field and advance to the semifinals.

With sloppy conditions from the rain and snow the night before, neither team could get much going in the first half, as the ball seemed to bounce back and forth in the midfield with neither team making much headway.

In the second half, Worcester Academy broke through first, capitalizing on a corner kick that found the back of the Loomis net on a direct chance. From there, the Pelicans increased the pressure but couldn’t seem connect to find the back of the net.

The Pelicans were still down by a goal with less than two minutes left to play in regulation when sophomore defender Alex Rhodes fired a low line drive from the midfield towards the top of the box. Freshman forward Tenn Murphy took an incredible touch to place the ball in front of herself while getting past her defender and blasted a shot past the Worcester goalkeeper into the side netting to even up the score.

The game moved to two 10-minute overtime periods. Loomis dominated the first 10 minutes, and Murphy scored again to give Loomis the lead. This time senior Kirsten Lees played the ball into a chasing Murphy, who made a move and beat the oncoming Worcester keeper, to give Loomis Chaffee the lead.

The second overtime period was intense as Worcester pushed hard. The Pelicans did not give in, though, as sophomore goalkeeper Danica Scully kept the back line in order and came up with a big save in the final minute.

Up next, the team heads to Buckingham Browne & Nichols to take on the top-seeded team in the tournament on Saturday, November 19. The game time is still to be determined.
