The girls varsity softball team defeated Suffield Academy 3-2 on Saturday, May 14, to improve to 8-4 on the season and remain in the postseason hunt.
The team also celebrated the high school careers of their two seniors and captains, Sophia Testa and Karishma Lawrence, after the game.
With beautiful weather and lots to celebrate, the Pelicans hoped to start the game off strong, but Suffield broke through the Loomis defense in the opening inning and took a 1-0 lead when a walk and two hits drove a runner home.
A few innings passed before the Pelicans got on the scoreboard, but junior Jaelyn Walsh changed that situation when she stepped to the plate in the second inning with two runners in scoring position and ripped a double into right field, giving the Pelicans a 2-1 lead.
Suffield scored another run in the fourth inning, but Loomis Chaffee freshman pitcher Jessica Chieco shut down the rest of the Tigers’ lineup, pitching a complete game, while the Pelican offense managed to score the winning run in the fifth inning.
Up next, the Pelicans travel to Kingswood Oxford, where they take on the Wyverns on Tuesday, May 17, in a game with major playoff implications.
