Girls Tennis Topples Taft

The girls varsity tennis team defeated Taft 6-3 on Wednesday, April 20, in a hard-fought and highly entertaining match on the road.

The afternoon began with competitive matches in doubles play, and the Pelicans earned a point thanks to the No. 2 pairing of sophomore Isabella Delach and freshman Sydney Huttner, who won their match 8-4. The No. 1 pairing of sophomore Charlie Liss and senior Lana Sheng took their closely-battled match to a tiebreaker at 7-7 and narrowly lost 8-10.

With the score 1-2 in favor of Taft after doubles play, Huttner, playing at No. 4 singles, and freshman Izzy Heflin, playing at No. 5, both won their matches 8-3 with some creative playmaking.

Then Liss, playing at No. 1, improved to an impressive 4-0 record on the season by shutting out her opponent 8-0, bringing the overall match score to 4-3 in favor of the Pelicans.

With the team match on the line, senior Lana Sheng, at No. 2, and Delach, at No. 3, came out victorious in back-and-forth battles. At one point both matches were tied at 6-6. Under immense pressure, Delach secured the team win by closing her match out 8-6, and Sheng battled through a 7-7 game tiebreak and won the tiebreaker 7-3, for the cherry on top.

Up next, the Pelicans host Choate on the North Courts at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23.
