Hockey Alums Well Represented at Connecticut Ice

The Pelicans were well-represented last weekend in the Connecticut Ice, an annual ice hockey tournament among four university teams in the state.

Five Loomis Chaffee boys hockey alumni played in the tournament, in which Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, University of Connecticut, and Yale University competed for Connecticut bragging rights January 27–28 at M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac’s team is ranked third in the country among Division I schools, and UCONN is ranked 12th.

The first game, played on Friday, January 27, featured Reilly Connors ’19, a junior at Yale, and Andrew Lucas ’18, a senior at UCONN. Lucas recorded an assist in the Huskies’ 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs.

Game two, also on Friday, featured Cody Hoban ’20, a junior at Sacred Heart, and brothers Anthony ’20 and Joey Cipollone ‘18, a freshman and senior, respectively, at Quinnipiac. Joey scored a goal, and Anthony recorded an assist in the Bobcats’ 5-0 win over the Pioneers.

With their first-round wins, UCONN and Quinnipiac advanced to the championship game on Saturday, January 28, setting the stage for a matchup between two of the top 15 teams in the country.

In the championship game, the Cipollone brothers and Quinnipiac University squeaked past Lucas and the Huskies with a 4-3 win. It was the Bobcats’ second straight Connecticut Ice crown.

Not surprisingly, all five of these alumni were impact players at Loomis, and Lucas, Connors, and Hoban captained the team as seniors.
