Loomis Chaffee Track and Field Athletes Compete at USATF-New England Indoor Meet

Seven Loomis Chaffee athletes competed in the USA Track and Field New England Championship on Sunday, February 18, at Harvard University.

Senior Orion Browne stood out as one of the best athletes at the meet. He won his event, the men’s triple jump, with a performance that ranks among the top 15 nationally for high school boys.

Also placing among the top eight in their events were senior Sebastian Cohen (7th in the scholastic boys 60-meter hurdles) and sophomore Alex Fisher (4th in the men’s mile run). Alex, a finalist last fall at the Footlocker National Cross Country Championships, also raced in the 800 meters on Sunday.

Other Loomis athletes faring well in their events on Sunday were junior Jack Muhlhauser (3000-meter run) and sophomores Miles Gackstetter (mile), Joseph Hurd (mile), and Chidi Moemeka (60-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, and 400-meter dash).

Orion is set to attend Yale University next fall, where he will be part of the Bulldogs’ track and field team. Orion has had an outstanding career at Loomis with his senior spring season yet to come. According to boys track head coach Scott Purdy, Orion “is an outstanding track and field athlete who will also be a perfect fit academically in the Ivy League.”

Orion won the triple jump on Sunday in dominant fashion, with his best jump coming in at 14.41 meters (47 feet-3 inches). With his performance, Orion qualified for both the Nike and New Balance indoor nationals.

“The biggest thing as I’ve continued to compete more and more is learning how to stay present and not get too high or too low during competition,” said Orion. Understanding this concept has helped Orion’s development as an athlete and has allowed him to maximize his potential.

The athletes who participated on Sunday all have bright futures ahead of them. You can see them and their teammates on the Wilde Track this spring, when they will compete for the Loomis boys track and field team.
