Pelican Swimming Earns 93–85, 94–84 Wins Over Hopkins

The Loomis Chaffee girls and boys swimming and diving teams both earned wins over Hopkins School on January 24 at home.

The boys team relied on its depth to secure a 94–84 win. While the boys won eight of the 12 events, the points scored by Pelicans for second-, third-, and fourth-place finishes also proved pivotal to the meet’s outcome, and a number of Loomis boys swam their lifetime best times in their events. Senior Chris Zeng won the 200-meter freestyle, and sophomore Matt Cormier took first in the 200-meter individual medley. Junior Andy Vuong led the sprints with a victory in the 100-meter free while sophomore Chris Nelson won both the 400-meter free and the 100-meter backstroke. Senior Georges DeVos earned first place in diving, and the Loomis quartet of senior George Mirgorodskiy, senior Wyeth Andrews, sophomore JC Liu, and freshman Gavin Berky won the 200-meter free relay. To cap the meet, the 400-meter free relay team of Liu, Berky, Nelson, and Zeng won the final event.

The girls secured a 93–85 victory, opening the meet with a win in the 200-meter medley relay as freshman Eunice Huang, junior Chloe Porter, sophomore Demi Akanbi, and senior Scarlett Berky touched first. Senior Marin Benoit had a strong day, winning both the 200-meter free and the 100-meter butterfly. Senior Sally Langmaid picked up wins in the 50-meter free and the 400-meter free, while freshman Gigi Langmaid took first in the 200-meter individual medley. Loomis also controlled the girls diving event, with junior Sarah Lamphere and sophomore Annika Schnabel finishing first and second on the one-meter board. The team also won both the 200- and 400-meter free relays.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, January 31, traveling to face Hotchkiss School at 3 p.m.
