New Loomis Chaffee faculty member Pierce Ellinwood has been named a co-head coach of the school’s ski team, Athletic Director Sue Cabot has announced.
An experienced competitive downhill skier, Coach Ellinwood arrived on the Island after two years at Dartmouth College, where he earned a master’s degree in liberal arts studies and also gained coaching experience as a graduate assistant for the Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team. Coinciding with his time at Dartmouth, Pierce also coached the under-12 athletes at Pats Peak Ski Team in Henniker, N.H., from 2017 to 2019.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining such an awesome community and can’t wait to get on the slopes and work with our athletes,” he said. “I have always had a passion for skiing, and I’m looking forward to training and teaching our ski athletes.” Coach Ellinwood will be working side by side with Coach Hendrickson, who has been working with the team since 2016.
Coach Ellinwood grew up racing for Pats Peak Ski Team and for the Waterville Valley Black and Blue Trail Smashers in Waterville Valley, N.H.
While at Concord High School, he helped the team to three straight Division 1 New Hampshire team championships from 2008 to 2010, and a third-place team finish in 2011.
As an individual skier, Pierce placed third in both slalom and giant slalom at the New Hampshire individual championships in 2010 and was the overall champion in both slalom and giant slalom at the New Hampshire individual championships in 2011. He also was the team captain in 2011.
Pierce also teaches English, will assistant coach varsity lacrosse, and is a resident faculty member in Warham Hall.
