Softball Captures Western New England Class A Championship

The Loomis Chaffee softball team upset top seed Hopkins School 9-3 on Sunday, May 17, to capture the Western New England Class A Championship and finish the season with a 10-7 overall record. 

Loomis, seeded No. 2, recorded its first runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Ella Domer-Shank drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before senior Adeline Roper followed with an RBI single down the right field line to give the Pelicans a 2-0 lead. 

The Pelicans broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs. Junior Solen Trainor singled home a run, junior Adrianna Cicchiello delivered a two-run single, and Roper added a two-run double to extend the Loomis lead. 

Cicchiello capped off her strong afternoon in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to left field. The junior finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two singles, and four RBIs. 

Freshman pitcher Victoria Budarz earned the win in the circle for Loomis, allowing two hits and two runs over four innings while striking out one and walking four. Trainor appeared in relief for the Pelicans. 

Loomis totaled 13 hits in the championship victory. Roper went 2-for-4 with three RBIs while junior Larkyn Domer-Shank, Trainor, and junior Hazel Lamb each recorded multiple hits. Trainor also stole three bases as the Pelicans finished with four stolen bases and turned one double play defensively.
