In a rematch of the 2017 Class A New England Prep School Athletic Conference boys soccer championship, the Loomis Chaffee boys varsity soccer team bested the Bears of Berkshire 2-1 on Saturday, October 2.
The Pelicans got off to a strong start and dominated possession in the first 15 minutes of the game, creating a couple of quality chances that they couldn’t convert.
But in the 29th minute of the game, a clever combination between junior Kieran Chandler and senior captain Ollie Martin resulted in a shot on goal that was saved. Senior captain Will Cleary crashed the net, collected the rebound and laced the ball into the back of the net to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.
No more than a minute later, the Pelicans earned the ball back after some pressure in the Berkshire half, and Cleary threaded the Berkshire defense with a pass to Martin, who slotted the ball just out of the keeper’s reach, giving Loomis a 2-0 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the first half.
Berkshire made a few tactical adjustments in the second half, and while the Pelicans continued to pressure and create solid opportunities, it was Berkshire that scored the next goal after an unfortunate bounce.
Despite the setback, the Pelicans stuck to their game plan and showed considerable grit in managing the rest of the game and securing the win.
Up next, the Pelicans take on familiar foe Worcester Academy, another perennial powerhouse, on their home field, on Wednesday, October 6, at 4 p.m.
