The varsity football team defeated Hotchkiss 49-12 under the lights of Pratt Field on Saturday, October 9, improving the team’s record to four wins and no losses.
The game was a highly anticipated one on campus as the Loomis Chaffee Athletics Association scheduled a whiteout for the fans. Students and other community members were encouraged to wear white, and the student crowd built to more than 200 at its peak.
Inspired by the crowd, the Pelicans scored on their first two possessions of the game. The first came when sophomore quarterback Dante Reno threw a 19-yard pass to senior Chase Collyer. The Pelican defense stopped Hotchkiss on the next possession, and on the ensuing punt senior returner Da’Quan Gonzales ran the ball back 41 yards to double the Pelicans’ score.
The first quarter ended at 20-0 in favor of the Pelicans after a three-yard touchdown run by junior running back David Egbe.
The second quarter was identical to the first in that the Pelicans scored three touchdowns and kept Hotchkiss off the board. Gonzales scored his second touchdown of the game after picking off a pass on defense and taking it all the way back to the endzone, and then Reno threw his second and third touchdown passes of the game when he connected with junior Matt Brunelle on a 56-yard pass, and then Collyer on a 23-yard pass.
The final score for Loomis came from Egbe in the third quarter, giving the Pelicans a 49-0 lead.
Hotchkiss scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to bring the game to a 49-14 finish.
Up next for the Pelicans, another highly anticipated game against a top team in New England as Loomis hosts Deerfield on Saturday, October 16, at 2:30 p.m. during Family Weekend.
