The girls volleyball team won its third consecutive Founders League title by defeating Kent 3-0 on Saturday, November 13.
In their regular-season finale, the Pelicans traveled to Kent as part of a revived Kent Day. Knowing a win would secure a Founders title and the No. 1 overall seed in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class A Tournament, the Pelicans came out focused and determined to set a strong tone for the match.
Sure enough, senior captain Sophia Testa served the Pelicans to a 9-0 lead, and Loomis Chaffee took the first set 25-9.
Loomis changed its lineup in the second set, and the Lions came out with energy to keep the set close early. With the score 12-10, Loomis earned four straight points with kills by senior Masha Sidorova and sophomore Sam Mancini and a block by senior Em Collins. Then junior captain Kori Meissner extended the lead to 19-12 with an impressive service run, and despite an attempt from the Lions to mount a comeback, the Pelicans took the second set 25-21.
Loomis made additional adjustments to the lineup for the third set, and with the score tied at three, junior Kaitlin Flynn recorded three aces en route to a 8-3 lead. Loomis extended its lead and got contributions from junior Turner Brode, sophomore Maddie Moenkhaus, and senior Willa Hock as Loomis sealed the set 25-11, securing the Founders League title.
“We’ve just had so much fun this year, and never before have I been a part of a team as driven as these girls,” said head coach Jeff Dyreson. “On top of that, the support our fans have given us all year is incredible. They were here today to celebrate as well, and it meant a lot to us as a team.”
The volleyball team would like to thank all the fans who traveled to Kent and cheered from the sidelines. The Loomis spirit was much appreciated throughout the season.
Up next, the Pelicans take on Choate at home in the Olcott Center in the first round of the NEPSAC Class A Tournament. The game will take place Wednesday, November 17, at 3:30 pm.
